Traffic policemen make money from indisciplined motorcyclists

Indisciplined motorcycle riders in the city are helping line the pockets of the traffic police of Hakha, the capital of Chin state, Burma.

Traffic policemen in the city are making between 30,000 to 50,000 Kyats a week, said a local with connections to the traffic police department in Hakha.

“The traffic police are entitled to levy a fine to maintain traffic rules and regulations. But they apply different fines on different motorcyclists. They do not fine riders not using a helmet,” said a motorcycle owner in Hakha.

The traffic policemen of Chin state usually carry out on-the-spot fines at their check points without forwarding the cases to their office.

“The traffic police do not follow their own rules and regulations,” said a local.

The motorcyclists from rural areas face checking at the check points of the traffic police in the city and fined.

“Traffic policemen have been checking groups for motorcycle licenses, those without helmets and check what they are carrying,” said a local.
