Chin government set to tackle poverty


Only 35 % of the Chin population is expected to be below the poverty line by 2015 under the leadership of Mr. Hung Ngai, Chief Minister of the state government, said Mr. Shwe Khan Thang, an administrator of Hakha, the capital of Chin state, Burma.

The administrator was addressing the ‘State Rule and Regulation Workshop’ conducted in Hakha. He said that 35% of the Chin population will be brought below the poverty line by 2015. The Chin state population is the poorest among 14 states and divisions in Burma.

“An indication of the state’s poverty is that 73 % of the Chin people are poor. The new government is preparing to keep less people below the poverty line, said Mr. Shwe Khan Thang.

The state government has been issuing loans to the people to tackle poverty, said Mr. Thang.

Mr. Thang added that the state government has been issuing three lahks Kyat predominantly to those who have national identity cards and landlord licenses.

The loan system will commence from this month in the first phase and around 300 people have been registered to get loan depending on those who applied since August 2011.

The loan system will be in place properly from next year and the state government expects it will improve the chances of eking out a livelihood for the people. Khonumthung news
