Chin civilian dies after beating by soldiers

A villager from So Zang, Teddim Township in Chin state, Burma succumbed on July 11 to injuries he sustained during a quarrel between local authorities and a motor cycle owner over a demand for money.

Two Burmese Army soldiers and a policeman from Kalemyo, Sagaing division were checking motor cycle owner’s license in Kanedy Mountain near Teddim town and were extorting money from the riders.

Thang Hmung from Zo Zang village intervened but was beaten up by the soldiers. He was admitted to Teddim hospital with injuries. He died in the hospital on Friday, said Mr. Thang Do Lian, a leader of the Teddim Township National League for Democracy (NLD).

“Thang Hmung tried to mediate in the quarrel, which stemmed from the soldiers and the policeman trying to extort money from owners of unlicensed motor cycles. But the soldiers beat him brutally. He sustained injuries on his head,”said Mr. Thang Do Lian.

The policeman was arrested but the two army personnel are absconding. A police inspector from Hakha, the capital of Chin state will visit the place of occurrence and investigate.
